Project Description

This project was identified by the community as a high priority due to the fact that S. Main St. acts as a major gateway to downtown Statesboro and it serves as a natural connection between the GSU Campus and downtown Statesboro. This project will be completed in three phases. Phase I will stretch from Tillman St. to Brannen St. (approximately 0.5 mi). Improvements will include the installation of drainage, sidewalks with crosswalks on the side streets, decorative street lighting, benches, bike racks and landscaping. Some costs of the project will be the relocation of overhead power lines, telephone lines and cable to underground. Existing water, sewer and gas lines will be replaced.

Project Status

As of July 2022 the project has moved toward the above ground work on most items. All storm and contracted utilities have been relocated as per plans. The city is working with Georgia Power Company and Frontier communications to remove the overhead lines necessary to complete the streetscape and landscaping plans. Georgia Southern has coordinated the installation of street lights along the project to aid in the streetscape improvement efforts.
