The City of Statesboro operates under the Council-Manager form of government, established by a 1999 Charter amendment. The Mayor is elected at large while the five council members are elected by district. All elections are non-partisan, and terms are for four years with three of the members elected every two years.

All elections for Mayor and City Council members are conducted in accordance with the Georgia Election Code and Rule of the State Election Board.


District 2 City Council Seat Special Election


In accordance with O.C.G.A. 21-2-540, a Special Election will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2026 for the purpose of electing a Council Member for the unexpired term of the vacant District 2 City Council Seat.

QUALIFYING:

Candidates desiring to qualify in this Special Election shall file with the City Clerk their Notice of Candidacy at City Hall 50 East Main Street, Statesboro, Georgia. The Notice of Candidacy shall be filed from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Wednesday, August 19, 2026, and Thursday, August 20, 2026.

The qualifying fee for the office of City Council seat 2 is $330.00

The last day to register to vote will be October 5, 2026

For the candidate requirements, individuals must:

  - Be at least 25 years of age.
  - Be a resident of the city for one year.
  - Have resided in District 2 for at least six months immediately preceding the election date.
  - Be a qualified elector to vote in city elections.
  - Have no convictions for crimes involving moral turpitude, unless a full pardon has been granted and citizenship rights restored.
